- Daniel was born and grew up in Devon, an exceptionally beautiful and inspiring place in the south-west of England. It was this region that became the subject of his early photographic work when, at the age of 16 and too young to drive, he explored the lanes, coast and moors on foot and by bicycle, photographing the unique landscapes.
In 1998, at the age of 19, he first took his camera abroad on a road trip around Europe. Australia, New Zealand and America followed in 1999 then Ireland (2000) and a 3-month trip to Spain (2001) where he set up a darkroom near Granada photographing the people and places in the small mountain village where he lived. 2001 also marked the start of a fascination with Morocco making the first of four trips to the country, travelling down to Marrakech and over the Atlas mountains into the Sahara desert. The following year he returned, this time hitch-hiking from the UK.
In 2003, fueled by an interest in the Mayan World, Daniel set off on a journey spanning the countries of Central America from Mexico to Panama. Focusing mainly on the people he met, the images from this trip and subsequent trip in 2006 give an intriguing insight into the culture and diversity of this part of the world.
In September 2003 he moved to Murcia, Spain, where he again set up a darkroom and spent the following year putting together a portfolio of images taken in the provinces of Andalucía and Murcia in southern Spain. 2004 also saw a series of successful exhibitions including a thought-provoking reportage on the growing water crisis in that area of Europe.
Daniel returned to Latin America in 2005 but this time it was the Andean countries of South America that became the subject of his camera. Travelling through Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile it was the people that were once again focused upon in an attempt to understand the continent better.
Between 2013 and 2019 Daniel embarked on an epic project which would take him on a 25,000km journey to every corner of Spain following in the footsteps of Spanish impressionist painter Joaquín Sorolla to see how Spain had changed 100 years on. As well as the physical places the project focused on the customs, traditions and, above all, people of the diverse regions of a land which continues to be one of the most fascinating countries of the world.
This Sorolla project has now evolved into a feature-length documentary film, The Man Who Painted Spain, due for release later in 2023. - Daniel Davies-Ostrom is known for Scream a Little Dream (2014).
